MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES/NURSING
The APSD is presently served by nine registered nurses that are certified school nurses. Their mission is to optimize student health and learning by advancing the practice of school nursing. Their vision is working towards improving, protecting, education, and maintaining the health of our students, their families and school personnel.
The services provided by our school nurses are almost too numerous to list. In general, however, our school nurses:
- care for the medically-fragile children in our schools
- monitor required immunizations, perform vision, hearing and scoliosis screenings
- provide counsel and answers to the health-related questions of our students and staff
- promote healthy lifestyles and give “good health tips” to students and staff
- serve as front-line responders for health-related and injury emergencies in our schools
- train our staff how to respond and react in the event of medical emergencies
- teach good hygiene practices to our students
- determine when a child may be too ill to stay at school
